GIG HARBOR, Wash. —
A man who led state troopers on a high-speed chase down the Kitsap Peninsula to Gig Harbor got away after crashing his car early Tuesday.
Washington State Patrol Sgt. Ken Przygocki told KIRO 7 that a trooper spotted the car driving erratically around 2 a.m. along SE Mullenix Road outside of Bethel.
The trooper tried pulling him over, but the driver took off.
He raced down Highway 16, reaching speeds of up to 100 mph, before crashing into a guard rail on the ramp to Wollochet Drive Northwest.
The crash damaged a "City of Gig Harbor" sign.
The trooper saw the man get out of the car, jump over the guard rail and disappear into the vegetation.
Pierce County deputies and police dogs responded to help search for the suspect.
Only KIRO 7 was on the scene as officers searched the area.
But they did not find the man.
Officers cleared the scene just before 5 a.m.
