Man Killed in Crash While Fleeing Trooper

NISQUALLY, Wash. —

A man was killed in a crash on Interstate 5 Nisqually while attempting to elude a state trooper, the Washington State Patrol said.

Officials with the WSP said that late Wednesday night, a trooper parked on the right shoulder of northbound Interstate 5 near Marvin Road saw a black Chevrolet pickup driving erratically.

The driver of the pickup passed a tractor-trailer on the right and then swerved in front of it, causing the tractor-trailer driver to brake quickly to avoid a crash.

The trooper pulled onto the freeway and caught up to the pickup on northbound I-5 near Nisqually.  The driver of the pickup was traveling more than 80 mph and making multiple lane changes without signaling, the state patrol said.

When the trooper tried to pull the driver over, the driver didn’t stop and tried to pass a car on the right shoulder, police said.

While driving on the right shoulder, the driver of the pickup swerved to the left to avoid hitting a DOT sign, lost control of the pickup, crossed all lanes of I-5 to the left, and continued off the roadway.

The pickup rolled over, and the driver was ejected from the truck.   He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the driver was not wearing a seat belt.

It is not known if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.

Police said the 1990 Chevrolet pickup had incorrect license plates and was stolen from the Tacoma area a few days earlier.

The WSP said the pursuit lasted only moments before the crash occurred.
