Man Killed In Small Plane Crash Near Graham

GRAHAM, Wash. —

One person was killed and another injured when a small experimental airplane crashed in a field near Graham Thursday afternoon.

The plane crashed near the Kapowsin Field Airport at about 264th Street East and 150th Avenue East.

Assistant Chief Tony Judd with Graham Fire and Rescue said the passenger, a man in his 60s, was transported to Tacoma General with what appeared to be minor injuries.

“He was conscious and talking to us. He had a wrist injury and some cuts and abrasions, but for the most part he was doing fine, Judd said.

The pilot, a man in his 70s, was killed in the crash, Judd said.

Witnesses said the plane appeared to be having some sort of difficulty as it was taking off from the airfield. The aircraft made a hard right turn north of the runway and then slammed into the ground in the middle of large pasture.

Eyewitnesses living nearby ran out to the plane to try to help the trapped men inside.

“I was one of the first ones at the scene. I got the survivor out, i cut him loose,” said eyewitness Bill Wilson.

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Kevin McCarty said the plane was a Zodiac CH 601, made by Zenith Air. He said the FAA wanted to ground them last year because of problems with the wings.

Video from Chopper 7 showed the front end of the plane shattered into pieces in a field with its tail pointed upward.

Judd says the FAA is investigating the crash.
