Man nearly drowns at Lakewood park

LAKEWOOD, Wash. —

A man is in grave condition after a near-drowning early Saturday morning, according to West Pierce Fire and Rescue.

The incident happened when a 911 came in at 12:44 a.m. of a man who disappeared under the water while swimming with friends in the swimming area of Harry Todd Park.

West Pierce Fire and Rescue crews worked with the Lakewood Police Department in the search for the man. It took three minutes to find the man after entering the water.

CPR was performed on the man and he was taking to a nearby hospital where his condition is considered grave, according to West Pierce Fire and Rescue.

"Our rescue swimmers and rescue divers train for these types of events regularly," said Battalion Chief and Dive Rescue Program manager Patrick MacNealy.  "This is the time of year when the index of water-related emergencies increase, both day and night."

According to West Pierce Fire and Rescue, two people fell out of a boat on Lake Steilacoom this year. Crews saved one person and the other person drowned.
