THURSTON COUNTY, Wash. —

Thurston County police said a man used an unusual ploy to try to kidnap a woman's children Wednesday.

The man came to the door of a home in the 8300 block of 49th Loop Avenue Southeast at 12:30 p.m. and told the woman who lived there that he had a court order signed by a Thurston County superior court judge for her to surrender her children to him based on allegations made against her by her husband. Deputies said the woman asked to see the court order. The man refused.

The woman told the man she would not give up her children without talking to a deputy or her husband. She then shut and locked the door.

Officers said the suspect made no attempt to force entry or take other action to seize the children.

Police said the man left in a white minivan.

A check of court orders by investigators did not reveal any order involving the victim, her children, or her husband.

The children's father was contacted. The man said he had no knowledge of the incident and had not been granted any court orders.

The victim’s three children, ages 5, 3, and 6 months are safe.

The Sheriff's Office said the man used the name Michael Jenkins but did not show any identification. He is described as white, in his mid-to-late 40s, 5 feet 6 inches tall, with a thin build, dark brown hair, a full beard and dark rimmed glasses. He was wearing a dark charcoal suit jacket and slacks.

Police said there was no one named Michael Jenkins employed in either the superior court, Child Protective Services or the Sheriff’s Office.

A sketch of the man was created from the victim’s description.

Anyone who has been the victim of similar attempts or recognizes the man is asked to call the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office at 360-709-3072 or Crime Stoppers at 360-493-2222 .
