SEATTLE —

A man listed among Washington state's top 10 most wanted fugitives turned himself in to police Wednesday night after being spotted on a school field trip earlier in the day and sparking a manhunt in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood.

Donald Vasser, a man with a long, violent criminal history, and what one police officer said was a dislike for police, surrendered at the King County Jail at around 8 p.m., a Department of Corrections employee told KIRO 7. A DOC employee was able to contact Vasser and his wife on the phone and convince Vasser to turn himself in. He was taken into custody without incident.

Vasser was on his daughter's school field trip Wednesday, the DOC said, when another parent, a DOC employee, recognized him as one of Washington's top 10 most wanted and called police, an officer told KIRO 7's Gary Horcher. Police said the caller told them Vasser was out with 20 kids and three parents.

The officer who talked to Horcher said police confronted Vasser at 12th and Mercer, there was a struggle and Vasser lost his jacket and ran.

Lowell Elementary School on Capitol Hill was locked down while police searched for Vasser, though students were eventually released to their parents while the search was still active.

Students at Lowell Elementary were being released to their parents sometime after 4:30 p.m., police said.
