Marijuana Pipe Cracks Unsolved Rape Case

VASHON ISLAND, Wash. —

People who live on Vashon Island said they were stunned to hear that a 27-year-old island resident has been charged in connection with two rapes.

DNA from a smoking pipe linked Brian Dublin to the rapes, one in 2003 and the other in January, detectives at the King County Sheriff's Office said. In both cases, detectives said a man entered a house at night and attacked teenage girls.

According to court documents, Dublin sneaked into a Vashon Island home 4 a.m. and assaulted a 16-year-old girl while she was sleeping.

The 16-year-old told police that it was so dark that she couldn't see the man's face but felt his beard.

She said the man threatened her, saying "If you make another sound, I will kill you!"

A few minutes later, he asked the victim, "Are you going to tell anybody? If you do, I have friends."

The victim replied: "No, I didn't even see you."

Police said that after they narrowed down suspects, they tested DNA taken from Brian Dublin from a marijuana pipe confiscated from him by Chelan Police police four years ago.

They said the DNA was a match to the man in the January rape, and said he's now suspected in a 2003 home-invasion rape.

On the island Thursday, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Gary Horcher said everyone he spoke with knows Dublin and was stunned to hear about the charges against him.

"They tell me they knew him as a nice guy and never saw this trouble coming," Horcher said.

Dublin will be in court for arraignment in early June.
