Marijuana Use Forces Seattle Patient Off Transplant List

SEATTLE —

A local man cannot get a life-saving liver transplant because he used medical marijuana for symptoms of Hepatitis C.

Timothy Garon, 56, will die in the next few days, his son told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News, and he can't understand why he was denied a place on the transplant waiting list.

Doctors said drug use is one of the factors they consider in deciding whether a patient is likely to be able to handle the treatment regimen required of people who have transplants.

Garon's son told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Jeff Dubois that it's too late for his father, but the system needs to be changed.

Garon is the lead singer for Nearly Dan, a Steely Dan cover-band. He was charged with manufacturing marijuana for his arrest in December at a rental home in Mountlake Terrace.
