Maritime Group Wants New Seattle Viaduct

SEATTLE, Wash. —

A maritime industry group has weighed in for a new elevated highway to replace the deteriorating Alaskan Way viaduct.

Gov. Christine Gregoire is expected to decide by next week her preference on a replacement, the Seattle Times reported.

Options include a tunnel, new surface roads along the waterfront, a new elevated highway or tearing down the existing viaduct and doing nothing else.

In a letter to Gregoire, the North Seattle Industrial Association says an elevated highway would maintain traffic and freight capacity. The group also says it could be built within the state's projected budget and without additional taxes.

Association president Eugene Wasserman says there is no future in financing a more expensive tunnel with tolls on motor vehicles, and he calls a surface replacement the "worst of all worlds."
