Mayor Cracks Down On Nuisance Properties

SEATTLE —

Stating that the city's land use, housing and weed codes need to be stricter, Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels Friday announced a program which will significantly increase fines for landlords and property owners who refuse to repair dilapidated homes, turn back yards into junk yards or let bushes and weeds grow out of control, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

Last week, the owner of a property in the Roosevelt neighbor in northeast Seattle, who has been fined numerous times, was hit with a $70,000 fine for violations at that property and one nearby last week.

“The house isn’t managed at all really. Our roof leaks and we don’t have heat. We didn’t have garbage service until maybe a month ago, and it’s the owner who just takes it himself,” said Jennifer Harts, a renter at the property for about two months.

“We think the tools need to be stronger. They also need to be more flexible for people who are trying to respond and then be tougher on those that don’t,” said Nickels.

Jennifer Harts said she couldn’t be happier.

“I think it might be a little reality check of how he might run a house,” said Hart.
