Members Of Closed Seattle Gym Still Owed Money

SEATTLE —

There's new information about a popular Seattle gym that suddenly closed in July.

When Om Lifestyle and Wellness shut its doors, owner Ryan Matthews told KIRO 7 Consumer Investigator Amy Clancy that any of the club’s 1,500 members who were owed money would be seeing refunds in about 30 days.

But Clancy has learned that's apparently not the case.

It’s been more than six weeks since Om closed its doors, and frustrated members are contacting Clancy.

"It’s just sickening. I mean, that’s just so much money," Connie McDougall says. McDougall had more than $600 automatically withdrawn by Om from her bank account in June to pay for July personal training that never happened.

She says that at first, Matthews responded to e-mails -- but hasn't recently.

"My concern is, last week, more than a month after this happened, I asked him for an update, a status report, and I have heard nothing. My fear is my money is gone. And that’s a heck of a lot of money."

McDougall has filed a complaint with the Washington State Attorney General's office, where six complaints against Om have been filed since the lower Queen Anne business shut down.

Since KIRO 7’s first story aired, Consumer Investigators have heard from other members concerned about their refunds. Many others are blogging about their losses.

Luke Showalter says he and his fiancee are owed about $180, but, despite Matthew's promise to Clancy last month, Showalter's skeptical. "I can’t imagine that I’m going to see it again," Showalter told Clancy in July, "just with how this all happened."

McDougall isn’t giving up hope, saying, "I fully expect to get it back. And I want it back. Now."

Clancy called Ryan Matthews’ cell phone number twice, looking for his side to the story, but so far -- hasn’t heard back.

When she spoke with him in July, Matthews said any member seeking a refund should leave a message on the club’s website.

KIRO 7 Consumer Investigators will continue to follow the situation.
