Two public memorial services were held Wednesday on the first anniversary of a shooting rampage in Skagit County.

Church bells tolled for the six victims of a neighbor's murderous rampage.

September 2, marks the first year anniversary of one of the most tragic events in Skagit County history.

The community held tributes one at night and another during the day, honoring the lives lost.

Six people were killed -- four others, injured.

A candlelight vigil Wednesday night drew scores of people in honor of those who died.

The people who attended the memorial said they don't want the people who were killed a year ago, the people they loved, to be forgotten.

The flag was at half staff at the Alger Community Church as they remembered.

A part of a close knit community in life: Ann Jackson, Chester Rose, Julie Binchus, David Radcliffe, Gregoire Gillium and Leroy Lange.

The six people killed on that terrible September 2nd last year -- were remembered on a church lawn where many stood a year ago -- to toll the church bells.

To light candles.

To sing -- in their memory.

Richard Treston was one of the wounded who survived the attack allegedly at the hands of his longtime neighbor, 29 year old Isaac Zamora.

Treston told those gathered Wednesday night, “something horrible happened in our community. Something horrible happens somewhere in the world every day. Every hour of every day. But you never think it will happen to you.”

It happened to Nicholas Lange's father, Leroy, “it seems like just yesterday that this happened. Yet, it seems like an eternity since I was able to speak with him and give him a hug.”

It happened, too, to Julie Binchus and the sisters and daughter she loved.

Tonya Fenton said, “it was too soon for her to go. My, my babies needed her and I need her still. So it’s hard.”

“But we know she’s in a better place,” Carla Thompson said. “We know that she’s in heaven, and we feel good about that.”

Police arrested Zamora in the shootings. He is still awaiting trial.

Deputy Anne Jackson was remembered at an afternoon ceremony in front of the public safety building in Mount Vernon.
