Mental Evaluation Ordered For Fire Deaths Suspect

OLYMPIA, Wash. —

Bail has been set at $2 million for a man being held in the death of his wife cousin following a standoff and house fire in Rochester.

In addition, a judge in Olympia ordered that Thomas William Mason, 39, undergo a mental evaluation at Western State Hospital.

He was arrested Sunday following a standoff that ended when fire swept through his two-story, four-bedroom house.

Hours later authorities found the bodies of his 41-year-old wife Susan and cousin Tim Mason in the house.

Tom Mason remains in custody for investigation of first-degree murder and arson, all related to domestic violence. According to documents filed in Thurston County Superior Court, he told sheriff's deputies his wife and cousin had a hand in starting the fire.

The standoff began when deputies came to investigate a complaint by a neighbor who said Mason and his cousin threatened him with machetes.

Relatives say Mason had been on a downhill slide for years because of drug abuse.
