At about 3:30 a.m. on Friday, a police officer smelled ammonia and saw tubing and other materials that indicated methamphetamine was being made at an automotive repair shop in the 155th block of Southeast Main Street, Sumner police said.

"The employee didn't have a good explanation for being there at that time of hour, acted kind of nervous and anxious," said Sumner Deputy Police Chief Brad Moericke.

Police contacted the owner of JFS Automotive, who said he was unaware of the activity. Further investigation by detectives revealed that an employee of the business was responsible for the lab and had invited two other people to the business. All three were arrested in connection with the drug lab.

The repair shop is closed and the business cordoned off with crime scene tape as investigators process the scene. Police in protective suits pulled out jars of chemicals, bags of ammonium sulfate, an electric frying pan Friday, all materials used to make methamphetamines.

Sumner Police Department spokesman Carmen Palmer said the owners of the business are cooperating with law enforcement. Police said the owner had no idea what was going on after hours and that he had no clue that an employee had turned a reputable repair shop into an illegal drug making lab.

Several customers came to the shop, hoping to pick up their cars, but they were told they would have to wait until the police investigation was over.
