'Monster' Sentenced In Girlfriend's Murder

KENT, Wash. —

A man convicted of killing his girlfriend and stabbing his two daughters was sentenced to 72 years in prison Friday.

Man Sentenced in Girlfriend's Killing

William Barber broke down in court as he spoke to the judge just before he was sentenced, saying "I'm not that bad a person, your honor."

Barber was convicted of killing his girlfriend Carrie Colello in August 2001 and slitting the throats of his 2-year old and 5-year-old daughters in Colello's Renton home.

Prosecutors asked the judge for the maximum sentence, possible calling Barber "a monster."

"This case is ... far more egregious, far more evil and deserving of an exceptional sentence."

Colello's family echoed the prosecution, saying the young daughters will be victims the rest of their lives.

Barber had been charged with domestic assault twice before, and Colello had sought a protection order after making a domestic violence report last May.
