TACOMA, Wash. —

The Tacoma city manager announced Tuesday a budget plan that will cut 217 jobs from the city's payroll.

Of the cuts, 33 police positions and 29 fire department employees will be eliminated through early retirement or by not filling positions that are already vacant.

But city manager T.C. Broadnax said some layoffs, even for firefighters and police officers, are inevitable.

The cuts are meant to bridge a $60 million budget deficit.
