More Jobs To Be Generated Through AmeriCorps

EVERETT —

Hillary Allen teaches a class on how to get a job at the Center For Career Alternatives, a youth social service agency in Everett.

Her job is to help young people in need, many studying to get the equivalent of a high school diploma.

"Building relationships with these kids and feeling like I'm making a difference for them has just been awesome," said Allen.

Allen works for AmeriCorps in Snohomish County. AmeriCorps pays people to work for social service agencies.

Now the Obama Administration wants to triple the number of AmeriCorps workers nationwide, and that means more jobs throughout Washington and here in Snohomish County.

"The idea of being able to bring on more members, have them placed in more agencies, more schools--it's just really exciting," said Julie Houghton of Snohomish County AmeriCorps.

AmeriCorps workers make only enough money for basic expenses, but they receive nearly $5,000 for college or to pay off student loans.

They also receive medical insurance and get preferred placement for federal jobs.

AmeriCorps can also lead to other careers. Hillary Allen plans to use this experience to help her get a job as a school counselor.

"It's a great way for me to move into the area that I want to work in," said Allen.

In a bipartisan vote, the House of Representatives agreed to increase AmeriCorps from 75,000 jobs to 250,000. The measure is now before the Senate and President Obama promises to sign it into law.

There are AmeriCorps programs going on right now throughout Western Washington.
