Murder Trial Begins In Deputy's Shooting



SEATTLE —

Opening arguments began Thursday in the aggravated first-degree murder trial of a man accused of gunning down a King County Sheriff's deputy in June 2002.

Ronald Keith Matthews faces a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole if he is convicted in the shooting death of Deputy Richard Herzog.

Matthews ran naked and screaming through traffic in a Newcastle neighborhood. Prosecutors say when Herzog scuffled with the man, Matthews grabbed the deputy's gun and shot him several times in the head.

Matthews' attorneys don't deny the shooting but say their client is mentally ill.

Herzog was a 46-year-old married father of two and a seven-year veteran of the sheriff's department.
