SEATTLE, Wash. —

A groundbreaking in Seattle for a facility that could someday house a retired Space Shuttle.

But building a state of the art structure is still no guarantee we'll get a shuttle. VOTE FOR A SHUTTLE www.museumofflight.org/shuttle-boosters This ceremonial groundbreaking is like a pistol going off at the start of a race.

Seattle’s Museum of flight is competing with 20 other museums, hoping to be selected as the new home for a space shuttle.

We found 6 year old Luke Doucette, fresh from space camp, admiring depictions of the 15,000 square foot building to be called the Space Gallery.

The Museum of Flight is counting on its reputation as a draw for tourists, to help convince NASA to choose this location.

Michael Hallman from the Museum of Flight says NASA has a long list of prerequisites, “location in a major population center, being on a runway that can support a 747 to deliver the shuttle, major education programs.”

Seattle’s museum has one thing other competing museums don’t - a former astronaut at the helm.

Dr. Bonnie Dunbar flew on both Atlantis and Endeavour shuttles.

She hopes one of those would end up in Seattle. Although, she says, “Enterprise would be great, too.”

The three shuttles are slated to be retired by NASA, and distrubuted to locations around the country.

Dr. Dunbar hopes the shuttle will serve as an inspiration for kids, just as she was inspired by the Apollo program.
