Natural Gas Explosion Rocks Pierce Transit Building In Lakewood

LAKEWOOD, Washington —

A natural gas explosion ripped through a building near the Pierce Transit administrative building in Lakewood on Monday evening. A quarter-mile area around the blast site is being evacuated but that evacuation has been lifted, the Lakewood Fire Department said.

West Pierce Fire & Rescue Capt. Jenny Sharp said the explosion occurred shortly after 5 p.m. Monday. No injuries have been reported.

Firefighters were still trying to put out the blaze and Puget Sound Energy was still trying to turn the gas off at about 6:15 p.m.

Jeff Forslund, who works for Pierce Transit, said the explosion likely originated in the compressor building, and then spread to the trailer or vehicle that can be seen in our slideshow. Both structures appeared to be completely gutted by the fire.

Forslund said the administrative building is "quite a ways away" from the building that exploded and that it wasn't likely anyone was in the compressor building.

"Nobody really stays in there," Forslund said.

A worker at a nearby motel said that there was a loud explosion, followed by one or two more explosions about five minutes later. The worker said there were flames, but they later appeared to be put out.

A representative with PSE said a supervisor from the company is at the scene.

We will update this story as more information becomes available.
