SEATTLE —
The camp will be moving a few blocks away from their current location in a parking lot owned by University Christian Church to nearby University Congregational Church.
After voting by a two-to-one margin to host the camp, leaders from University Congregational Church visited the camp to share the news that they would be the latest host of the camp.
"I'm very proud of the fact that there was good healthy debate that stayed above accusations and tried to lay out what our faith is really asking us to do," said Reverend Catherine Foote.
Not everyone supported the plan. Some were concerned that the church's insurance policy wouldn't cover claims if it didn't have the necessary permits to host Nickelsville. Others cited the loss of $19,000 of parking revenue while the lot houses the camp.
In the end, most church members supported the decision.
"I can't imagine as a faith community saying 'no' to the homeless, especially this time of year, but any time of year, really. I think that's what we're here for, so I'm proud of our vote," said church member Laura Fleagle.
Later this week, residents will pack up the camp and head south to the parking lot on Northeast 45th and 15th Avenue Northeast.
