No Jail Time For Bellevue Couple In Starved Baby Case

BELLEVUE, Wash. —

A Bellevue couple prosecutors say starved their baby girl because the mother thought the child was too fat received no jail time.

Brittainy Labberton, 21, and her husband Sam Labberton, 25, pleaded guilty in June to third-degree criminal mistreatment.

Prosecutors say the mother of the normal sized newborn was so worried that she would be fat, that she not only withheld food, effectively starving her, detectives say she put a laxative in her baby's bottle.

According to charging documents, the child was so underweight, she had to be hospitalized then put into foster care.

The toddler and her older sister are now in state custody.

Brittainy told detectives she wants to have 12 children and appeared to be nine months pregnant with her third child.

The Labbertons were ordered to get couples counseling, Brittainy was ordered to have mental health treatment and the judge ordered both to report the birth of the new baby within 72 hours.
