SEATTLE —

A Seattle police officer shot and wounded a roaming dog that bit a 12-year-old girl in the South Park neighborhood Thursday.

Police said two dogs that escaped from a yard in the neighborhood were roaming around when one dog attacked the girl near 10th Avenue South and South Henderson Street shortly after 3:30 p.m.

When one dog charged an officer, he opened fire, wounding the dog.

Officers turned the wounded dog over to the Seattle Animal Shelter, and were able to capture the second dog.

Don Jordan with animal control said it appeared that the dog did not break the girl's skin, but the dog, which will survive,  has been quarantined as a precaution.

The dog was initially reported to have been a pit bull but was later identified by animal control as possibly a Labrador mix.

The dogs' owner arrived home during the incident, and was cited.
