SEATTLE —

A 31-year-old man who posed as a police officer and is accused of sexually assaulting a woman was arrested Friday evening, according to the Seattle Police Department.

Police said Michael Seville Lewis approached the woman in the 9800 block of Aurora Avenue North on June 15. He told the woman he was an undercover cop, but when the woman walked away, the man confronted her and displayed a badge. Police said the man pushed the woman into bushes and sexually assaulted her.

U.S. marshals found Lewis blocks away from the original crime scene.

Police are questioning Lewis and he will be booked into the King County Jail on multiple counts which include rape and assault.

The sexual assault unit’s acting lieutenant Rose McMahon said, "This is outstanding work by the case detectives. Still, we wouldn't have been able to solve it without assistance from the community who called in tips, the scientists at the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab and the U.S. Marshals who helped us track him down."

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Alison Grande with a resident, Charlie Sax, in the North Seattle neighborhood and he said he was relieved to hear about the news.

“I’m glad he got caught, that needs to be done,” Sax said. “Regardless, if you’re a male or female and there’s someone out there posing as a cop that can be kind of scary. Now that he’s behind bars, hopefully the can, because it’s wrong.”

According to police, they received tips about Lewis and someone told officers that he used a fake badge to steal drugs in the past.

KIRO 7 learned that Lewis was convicted for drugs, assault, theft and possessing a firearm in the past.

Lewis’ fake badge has not been located at this time.

Police said Lewis was identified by the department’s sexual assault detectives through good forensic science work.

Detectives do not believe Lewis is responsible for other crimes, but investigators are worried he could have more victims.
