EDMONDS, Wash. —
Edmonds Fire investigators believe a cigarette might have started an apartment fire that killed one person.
The victim has been identified as 52-year-old Andrew Duncan Oates.
The fire occurred at the Highlands Apartments on Edmonds Way.
Fire investigators believe the fire started on the second floor, and that Oates might have fallen asleep with a smoldering cigarette.
Officials said four or five units were damaged by fire or smoke. Power was cut to the building, so about 35 people who live in the building had to spend the night elsewhere, says Edmonds Fire.
The Red Cross was assisting residents with places to stay.
The fire was reported shortly before 5 p.m. and caused more than $550,000 in damage.
