NAD Park, on the site of Naval Ammunition Depot, was handed over to the city nearly 50 years ago. The Navy never conducted a thorough search for leftover explosives.

A specially trained team is now using metal detectors and magnetometers to see if any explosives remain buried in the wet ground.

The military is spending about $500,000 to search the park.

The closed portion of the park is expected to reopen by late April.
