SEATTLE —

Animal Control officials are warning people in West Seattle to keep their pets indoors at night following two recent attacks by a wild coyote.

A small dog was killed last week and a cat was attacked last summer, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reported.

Linda Ryssdahl, a cat owner, went door-to-door, distributing more than 200 flyers to let neighbors know about the problem.

"Our main goal was to let people know to make them aware that their pets were at risk," she said.

West Seattle's parks and greenbelts make an ideal coyote habitat.

"Coyotes have always been in West Seattle," said Christine Titus of Seattle Animal Control. "The best thing that we can do is to make sure that our pets are inside and safe and not to put any food or water out which will attract and support those communities."

Officials said attacks on humans are very rare.
