SEATTLE —

There’s a new petition drive in Seattle aimed at letting residents vote on the plastic bag ban that the City Council approved earlier this month.

The new ordinance eliminates plastic bags at grocery and convenience stores and charges 5 cents for each brown paper bag used.

If the petition gets more than 16,000 signatures, which it needs by mid-January, it would go to voters next year. Voters can download the petition at this link: www.saveourchoice.us/

The ban is scheduled to go into effect July 1.
