Pittsburgh Woman Killed By Elephant On Trip To Cameroon


PITTSBURGH -- A Pittsburgh woman is dead after she was attacked by a charging elephant in Cameroon.

Get RSS Feeds From KIROTV.com Fifty-five-year-old Heather Uber and another member of a tourist group were knocked down by the elephant last week. Uber then was bumped by the elephant's tusk in the lower abdomen.

The victim's husband says "everything happened so fast." Ned Uber tells the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette the tourists all tried to run around a tree -- but that the elephant was too fast for them.

It took nearly an hour to get Heather Uber out of the wildlife park, and another two hours to get her to the nearest hospital. She died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The Ubers were in Cameroon visiting their daughter -- who is a member of the Peace Corps.
