SEATTLE —

Two security guards were bitten and pepper sprayed Friday evening, after a man stole $500 worth of alcohol from a Central District grocery store, police said.

The incident happened after 10 p.m. at a Safeway store in the 2200 block of East Madison Street, according to the Seattle Police Department.

Police said security inside of the store saw a man walking out of the store without paying for alcohol.

Two security guards approached the man as he was putting the alcohol into a car where a woman was waiting.

The man punched and bit the security officers while the woman got out of the car and pepper sprayed the security guards, police said.

Witnesses helped the security officers and the man was handcuffed.

East Precinct officers arrived at the scene and arrested the man and woman.

The two security officers were treated at the scene by the Seattle Fire Department for bite marks and exposure to pepper spray.

Police said the man and woman were taken to the robbery unit office to be interviewed by detectives.

The two were then booked into the King County Jail for investigation of robbery, and the investigation is ongoing.
