TACOMA, Wash. —

A man who terrorized clerks at pizza and sandwich shops in Tacoma last month and then vanished was charged with six felonies Wednesday, a day after he tried to pull a gun on officers during his arrest, police said.

Joseph Robert Smith appeared in a Tacoma court with his hair dyed orange.  Prosecutors said Smith dyed his hair and wore a wig to try to change his appearance and avoid capture.

Detectives said Smith used a gun to rob a string of Tacoma fast food restaurants and a grocery store last month.

In addition to four counts of robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm, Smith is charged with assault.  Prosecutors said he had a gun and tried to pull it on officers who arrested him.
