BELLEVUE, Wash. —

Police arrested a suspect in the case of a motorcyclist who taunted a state trooper after his cruiser rolled over, the Washington State Patrol said.

A state patrol plane spotted a motorcyclist driving erratically through Bellevue on Sept. 11, the state patrol said. The motorcyclist, who was arrested on suspicion of DUI, turned out to be the suspect police were looking for in the taunting case.

Trooper Brian Salyer was hurt last month when he lost control and rolled his car while chasing a group of speeding motorcycles near Southcenter.

Salyer, a 22-year veteran, was trying to identify the lead motorcyclist when two other motorcyclists cut in front of him, forcing him to swerve and hit the brakes, sending his patrol car rolling, troopers said.

The cruiser flipped about five times before landing on its wheels on the median between I-5 and State Route 599, said troopers. Salyer was injured and trapped in his car.

Police said the bikers returned and taunted Salyer, then fled the scene.

When fire crews arrived, they found Salyer pinned inside. Crews had to cut open the cruiser's roof to get him out, and it is said that the divider separating prisoners from the troopers kept the roof of the car from collapsing.

The trooper suffered head injuries, a laceration to an artery in his neck and a concussion.

The state patrol said they would hold a news conference on the arrest Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Bellevue State Patrol office.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
