Police Break Up Check Counterfeiting Ring

BREMERTON, Wash. —

Police arrested two people and expect to file charges against six others for passing counterfeit checks with account numbers belonging to Social Security recipients, investigators told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Kevin McCarty.

An investigation by Bremerton police, Poulsbo police, and the Kitsap and King county sheriff's offices led to the arrests on Wednesday, police said.

The ring used the name of a Utah-based company that distributes Social Security benefits and legitimate account numbers on phony checks, police said.

The counterfeit checks caused delays for some people who receive Social Security benefits, police said.

Bremerton police plan to release further details later on Friday.
