Two men were killed during a gunfight with a homeowner in Pierce County where an illegal marijuana growing operation was found, police said.

Police said two masked men entered the home in the 5900 block of 132^nd Street East in the Summit area southeast of Puyallup Thursday morning.

The homeowner was there with his 9-year-old son when the men entered the house and a gun battle ensued.

Police said the homeowner and the two men all fired weapons.   The two intruders were killed.

The shooting comes on the first day when people can legally smoke marijuana, but police said the growing operation found at the home was in no way legal.

“This is a good example of what happens when you’re growing 50, 60 plants or so of marijuana in your house.  People are going to come take it from you,” said Ed Troyer with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.

Semi-automatic handguns, revolvers and shell casings were found at the scene and bullet holes were found in several windows and walls.  See photos from the shooting scene

Police said they found marijuana plants and leaves in different parts of the house and driveway.  

 The bodies of the masked intruders were found in the three car-garage of the large home.   See video of the home

“We're not going to know if he knew the intruders until we get further into the scene and take the bandanas off their faces and the hoods off of (the dead men),” said Troyer.

 The homeowner will likely be charged for growing marijuana but it is not known if he will be charged in the deaths of  the intruders.
