Police Search For Gunman Shuts Down Highway 167 In Renton

RENTON —

Police are searching a wooded area in Renton Saturday morning for a suspected gunman who reportedly shot at police officers.

Renton police spokeswoman Penny Bartley said officers were responding to a citizen complaint of prostitution activity on East Valley Road near the intersection of Highway 167 and Interstate 405 when a man fired several shots as officers approached him just after 11 p.m.

No one was injured and it was not known if officers returned fire, she said.

The gunman then ran across Highway 167 and hid in a wooded swamp just east of the highway.

State troopers quickly shut down Highway 167 from the Interstate 405 interchange south to the 180th Street exit while officers and police dogs from neighboring departments converged on the area to help with the search.

Deputies flying in the King County Sheriff Department's Guardian One helicopter used infrared equipment and a search light to locate the suspected gunman in the woods and directed officers to the area to keep him from escaping.

As the man was surrounded he continued to fire at officers and their patrol cars, but no one was hit.
