Police Shoot, Kill Man Claiming To Have Bomb

COVINGTON, Wash. —

Police shot and killed a man during a standoff in Covington Saturday afternoon after the man pointed a rifle at a sheriff's helicopter, according to King County Sheriff's Sergeant John Urquhart.

KIRO 7 reported that police evacuated a Covington neighborhood Saturday afternoon after a man claimed to have a bomb made from 250 pounds of fertilizer.

"That's a big bomb," said Sgt. Urquhart. "It could level that house and others around it."

The incident took place in an area near Southeast 264th St and 165 Ave Southeast.

It started Saturday morning when the 53-year-old man's estranged wife called police for help in retrieving property from the home. The man in the house was uncooperative and a standoff began.

Officers continued the standoff for several hours.

Eventually, the barricaded man stepped out on his back deck and pointed a rifle at King County Sheriff's helicopter Guardian One. That is when a police sniper shot the man.

Police used a robot to survey the man's property after the shooting to determine if there was a bomb.

They found fertilizer, but not a bomb according to Sgt. Urquhart.

After it was determined that it was safe for officers to enter the property, they found that the man was dead.

Deputies found a semi-automatic handgun and a rifle next to the man's body, along with a quantity of ammunition. "He was heavily armed," Urquhart told KIRO TV.

No deputies were hurt during the standoff.

KIRO reporter Graham Johnson said that neighbors were being allowed back into their homes as the incident ended and the investigation began.

Police did not immediately identify the man who was shot or the officer who shot him.
