OLYMPIA, Wash. —

Olympia police are warning residents to be aware of recent burglaries in the area, especially during the warmer temperatures for the upcoming weekend.

The number of burglaries have increased in Olympia.

With escalating temperatures, many residents have been leaving their doors and windows open or unlocked.

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Richard Thompson spoke with a victim and police about the string of burglaries.

On Wednesday, burglars targeted Andrew Peru’s home and stole laptops, iPods and other electronics while he nd his girlfriend were in bed.

“Me and my girlfriend were sleeping, and they came in while we slept,” said Peru. “It’s like a nightmare come true, really.”

Peru’s door was unlocked the night burglars came in.

Olympia police said burglaries are up nearly 50 percent this year. This weekend could be the hottest weather of the year, and police are worried the burglaries could get worse.

“With the hot weather, we’re concerned people are going to have doors and windows open that they’ll forget to close them when they go to bed,” said Laura Wohl of the Olympia Police Department.

In July, 63 percent of the burglaries involved entering through open windows or unlocked doors, police said.

“A lot of people here in Olympia leave their doors open. We feel safe here,” Wohl said. “It’s like having to second guess, really pretty terrible.”

Police remind residents who plan to open their windows and doors because of the heat to make sure to lock up before going to bed.
