SEATTLE —
Stickers have been placed on every parking meter throughout the city of Seattle for a program to let drivers know they don’t have to drive home drunk, but some people are having a hard time spotting them.
The stickers have been called “liquor stickers,” and they tell drivers they can prepay for two hours of parking the next morning so they don’t have to risk driving home drunk.
The program is part of the Seattle Nightlife Initiative and the Road Safety Action Plan.
Mayor Mike McGinn, the Seattle Police Department and members of Seattle’s nightlife community want people to pay close attention to the stickers, but the problem is the stickers are hard to notice.
KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter David Ham spoke with a Seattle resident about the stickers.
“You had to tell me to look, yeah. (Otherwise?) No. (You wouldn’t have seen it?) No,” said Alli Steblina.
The prepaid parking program started two years ago, and people have used it 45,000 times.
Mike Nolan of the Seattle Police Department was asked if there was any data that showed that there has been a decline in DUIs since the program was implemented.
“I’d have to look at the numbers, but my gut tells me no, not yet,” Nolan said.
Police add that data would be very difficult to track.
Jerry Everard owns Spitfire Grill in Bellltown and thinks the stickers are working.
“Maybe some of those aren’t people that are impaired even if half of them are. Then that’s like people are making a good choice,” said Everard.
KIRO 7 asked McGinn if the stickers are placed at a confusing spot.
“You know, you’re the first one that raised that to me. I’ll make you a promise, Mike [Nolan] and I will go and take a look around,” McGinn said.
There is no plan to move the stickers because numbers show people are using the service.
