Prisoner With Access To Child Porn Prompts State Senator To Seek Change In Law

LAKEWOOD, Washington —

A new push is underway in the Washington State Legislature to make sure prisoners don't have access to child pornography.

The action comes as a former pilot, Weldon Marc Gilbert, who's already admitted to molesting young boys is being allowed to watch sex videos he allegedly made while he's locked up in the Pierce County Jail. Gilbert is acting as his own lawyer in the case, and under state law, he's allowed to review evidence submitted in the case -- in this case, the videos.

Pierce County authorities and lawmakers are outraged.

State Sen. Mike Carrell (R, Lakewood) spoke with KIRO 7 on Friday and said he's hoping to change the law.

"It's simply wrong," Carrell said. "I understand we have to balance the right of the victim and also the person accused of the crime, but here we have the person being able to do the crime again as he is preparing to defend himself."

Carrell is now working with the judiciary committee to see if he can find that balance and get the law changed.
