Proposed Bill Would Ban Text-Messaging While Driving



SEATTLE —

Lawmakers in Olympia are considering bills that would ban text-messaging while driving and outlaw talking on a cell phone from behind the wheel.

Troopers said a chain-reaction accident last month in Seattle was caused by a driver looking at his electronic BlackBerry.

Six vehicles were involved in the pileup on Interstate 5.

House Bill 1214 would make operating a vehicle while reading, manually writing or sending a message on an electronic device a traffic infraction.
