PSE Replacing Pipes In Bellevue Neighborhood

BELLEVUE, Wash. —

Work began Monday to replace natural gas pipes to hundreds of homes on the Eastside following a fatal explosion in September that was blamed on eroding gas lines.

Puget Sound Energy crews started digging on the $3 million job to replace lines to about 600 homes in Bellevue's Spiritridge neighborhood.

Frances Schmitz, 68, was burned in an explosion at her house Sept. 2. she died on Sept. 26.

The blast, which sent debris flying across the street, occurred as a Puget Sound Energy employee was checking the ground to try to find the source of a natural gas odor that had been reported by a neighbor about an hour earlier.

Investigators believe the leak that caused the explosion was caused by pipe corrosion.

Metal pipes in the neighborhood are being replaced with plastic ones.
