PORT ORCHARD, Wash. —

A man arrested in the killing of a Port Orchard convenience store owner now faces a psychiatric evaluation.

Kitsap County Superior Court Judge Leila Mills ordered Monday that the 44-year-old suspect undergo a mental evaluation within 48 hours.

The man is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting of PJ's Market owner Alan Kono at the store last Thursday. Investigators said they have yet to determine a motive.

Trial is set for Aug. 15, but defense lawyer David Lacross said he believes Hower may not be competent to stand trial.

After hearing from lawyers for both sides, the judge ordered that the suspect could decide whether to take risperidone, a prescription drug also known as Risperdal that is used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Lacross argued in vain for a court order that he be in contact with the defendant before the medication is administered.
