SNOHOMISH COUNTY, Wash. —

A two-alarm fire damaged an apartment complex Sunday morning near Martha Lake, according to the Snohomish County Fire District 1.

Officials said the incident happened when a dispatcher received a 911 call around 10:20 a.m. reporting heavy smoke and flames coming from the Millwood Estates Apartments in the 16600 block of 6th Avenue West.

Fire District 1 crews were assisted by firefighters from Fire District 7 and the Lynnwood Fire Department.

"Heavy smoke was coming from units on the second and third floors when firefighters arrived," said Leslie Hynes, public information officer for Snohomish County Fire District 1. "The fire was spreading into the attic and firefighters quickly called for a second alarm to dispatch more firefighters and equipment to help contain the blaze."

A resident in the building had a minor injury he received when he tried going into an apartment because he thought someone inside was trapped. Medics treated the man.

According to Hynes, firefighters rescued a cat and a pet rat from a first-floor apartment.

The fire displaced 10 residents and caused more than $200,000 in damages. The Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross is providing assistance.

The Snohomish County Fire Marshal's Office is continuing an investigation into the cause of the fire.
