SUMNER —

A robber walked into the Alderton General Store Monday night, shot the store owner in the chest and took off with the cash register, a Pierce County sheriff's spokesman said.

The injured woman was listed in critical condition at St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma.

She was not immediately identified.

The woman's teenage daughter heard the shot and ran down from the family's home above the store, but didn't see the shooter, sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said.

There apparently were no customers in the store at the time.

The store is located on Washington 162 just south of Sumner.

Sheriff's deputies were searching for possible witnesses. Although the store is on a highway, the nearest business is a gas station about a block away.

Two workers at a nearby convenience store told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News they've begun wearing panic buttons around their necks.

Sheriff's deputies are hoping the drivers of two Honda CRXs seen in the area just before the shooting will come forward with information.

Detectives are reviewing surveillance tapes from nearby businesses.
