BELLEVUE, Wash. —

An overnight crash involving two cars and a double tanker truck spilled gas and closed Interstate 405 in Bellevue for hours.

According to the Washington State Patrol, at about 10:15 p.m. on Sunday, the driver of a northbound car lost control in some heavy rain and cut off the tanker truck.

Police said the truck hit the car and then its rear tank rolled over.  A second car hit the overturned tank.

The state Department of Ecology said as much as 3,400 of gallons of gasoline spilled onto the roadway and soil and into storm drains.

Northbound I-405 was closed through Bellevue about five hours overnight, causing a huge backup.

“ A lot of people are upset because they want to get home, and it’s 11 p.m. and we've been sitting here for over an hour in the rain, but hopefully, no one's hurt too seriously,” said driver Randy Altig.

A 47-year-old Kirkland woman involved in the wreck was transported to the hospital.

Officials said the trucking company hired a contractor to clean up under the supervision of the Department of Ecology.

Though no fuel got into Lake Washington, crews said they have a huge job ahead of them to figure out how to clean up the saturated soil along the train tracks underneath the freeway.

The smell is also an issue.  A nearby pediatric clinic called officials to complain about the fumes, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Jeff Dubois said.

The DOE set up air monitoring equipment and found the air quality was below levels of concern.
