Sammamish Gas Leak Causes Evacuation

SAMMAMISH, Wash. —

Fears of an explosion after a natural gas leak led firefighters to evacuate more than a dozen people from a Sammamish neighborhood early Wednesday.

It happened on East Lake Sammamish Parkway near Northeast 18th Place.

The road was closed for a few hours while more than a dozen people who live on the street had to stand outside in their pajamas, waiting for the all-clear to return to their homes.

The incident started at 1:30 a.m., when at least one neighbor awoke to a hissing sound and called 911. When firefighters arrived, they found a one-to-two inch pipe spewing natural gas. The pipe had been recently installed, due to construction in the area.

Firefighters called in Puget Sound Energy and evacuated about fourteen people from six homes.

At about 3:30 a.m., a technician from Puget Sound Energy crimped off the leaking pipe.

After checking for any remaining gas, firefighters let the residents return to their homes.

They were told to expect it would be several hours before repair crews could restore gas service to their houses.
