Search Continues For Missing Mount Baker Climber

BELLINGHAM, Wash. —

After weather stalled the search for a missing Mount Baker climber Wednesday, the search resumes Thursday for a Lynden man who did not return from a solo weekend climb.

KIRO 7 reporter Chris Legeros who was at the scene says snowmobilers are providing transportation to the 6,200 feet elevation. Searchers tell KIRO 7 the poor visibility continues to be the problem. They say they can’t check the missing hiker's possible route between the 7,000 feet elevation and the summit at 10,000 feet.

Searchers hope to find some sign of Kevin LaFleur, 31, who went hiking or skiing on Saturday and told friends he intended to summit Mount Baker.

On Tuesday, about 25 volunteers searched the lower areas of Heliotrope Ridge on the west side of the mountain and the lower Easton Glacier on the south side, the sheriff's office said.

"The weather and snow conditions were horrible. There was about 6 inches of fresh snow in Glacier and about a foot of fresh snow at the end of Glacier Creek Road, covering up any possible ski tracks that we would have found from Kevin," a sheriff's office news release said.

Some friends of LaFleur who spent Monday night at about the 5,200-foot level reported 50 mph winds and heavy snow through the night.

LaFleur's vehicle was located on Glacier Creek Road, at the snowline, which indicated that he intended to climb Baker using the standard route, officials said.

Searchers said they believe LaFleur, who is an experienced climber and backcountry skier, did not intend on spending the night on the mountain.

LaFleur's brother, Ryan LaFleur, flew in from Boston when he heard his brother was missing. Ryan said he was anxious for the search to resume.

“I’m an inpatient guy and waiting around just isn’t my strength. I want to be up there searching,” he said.

Officials said more than a foot of new snow has covered the missing man’s tracks so there is no indication as to which direction LaFleur went. Friends said it was unlikely that he became lost, as he had taken the route 25 to 30 times.

“We’re hoping that he had an accident where he broke a ski or sprained an ankle or something like that where he was just able to hunker down,” said Tim Terpstra, a friend of LaFleur.

Authorities said the search may resume on Thursday if weather allows.

The family of the missing hiker asks that anyone who can help in the search from either the ground or the air to call the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.
