Seattle-Based Cruise Ship Strikes Whale

JUNEAU, Alaska —

A necropsy will be performed Friday on a whale found dead on the bow of a cruise ship that left Seattle.

The Sapphire Princess cruise ship was forced to delay docking in Juneau, Alaska on Wednesday after the discovery of the whale.

A tugboat and divers worked to dislodge the whale carcass.

A boat then towed the whale to shore.

Scientists said it appears to be a young humpback.

A team of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration marine mammal specialists will perform a necropsy on the whale on Friday to determine how it died.

The ship, operated by Princess Cruises, will return to Seattle on Sunday, Aug. 1.
