In two final votes, the King County Council and Seattle City Council approved an agreement for a new sports arena in Seattle's SoDo neighborhood.  

If an NBA team is secured, the arena would be built near Second Avenue and Holgate Street.  The location is the reason for a potential lawsuit from the Longshore Union.

The International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 19 said building a new NBA and NHL area in that location will create traffic, drive away business and threaten their jobs.

On Monday,  union leaders announced that the union plans to file a lawsuit in  King County Superior Court, saying the city and county aren’t considering alternative locations for the arena because developer Chris Hansen will only contribute money for the project if it’s built in the SoDo location.

The union is calling the agreement a sham that makes a mockery of the requirement that government agencies considering public projects must consider alternative sites.

King County said an environmental review does take other sites into consideration. SoDo is just the preferred location.

The project is expected to cost $490 million with $200 million coming from taxpayers.
