Seniors Angry About Smooth Tacoma Burglar

TACOMA, Wash. —

A woman will plead guilty to at least 50 counts of theft and burglary and police say she targeted senior citizens in the Tacoma area.

Police said Yolanda Pouncey stole the items after convincing senior citizens like 73-year-old Judith Crutchfield that she needed help.

“If she had asked me to borrow money I probably would have loaned it to her, she was that convincing,” Crutchfield said.

Crutchfield had cash and her debit card stolen.

Police said 35-year-old Pouncey made her living stealing from unsuspecting senior citizens. She would approach their homes, earn the their trust is a matter of minutes and would walk out the door with cash, credit cards and jewelry, police said.

Josephine Meeker, 94, said she woke up from a nap to find Pouncey in her front room.

“I opened my eyes and she was standing in front of that chair…She said, ‘Could I go to the bathroom?’ ‘Certainly,’” Meeker said.

Pouncey allegedly left with an expensive family heirloom that had been in Meeker's family for more than a century.

“I went into the bedroom to see if anything was gone. I don't know why, but I discovered my jewelry was gone. My good jewelry,” Meeker said.

In a plea deal reached with the Pierce County prosecutor’s office, Pouncey will plead guilty to at least 50 counts of theft and burglary. Police said Pouncey is responsible for hundreds of thefts after years of targeting the most vulnerable of victims.

“It's just unbelievable that people would prey on seniors,” Crutchfield said.

One detective told KIRO 7 reporter Kevin McCarty that the only reason police and prosecutors stopped at 50 counts was because they had to stop piling on the charges at some point.

Pouncey is scheduled to enter a plea in February.
